Nature of the disease:

Leukemia has many form of cancer that affects the blood cells, including the oxygen-carrying red cells and certain infection-fighting white cells. It also includes the granulocytes, macrophages, lymphocytes, and platelets.

A leukemia begins when the mature bone marrow in the spongy tissues becomes         cancerous, multiplying uncontrollably and overrides the body’s normal restrictions on the cell division. Later on, the marrow becomes crowded with the cancer cells and become the descendant of the abnormal cells. It also accumulate the lymph nodes, spleen and anywhere in the body. By this time, the leukemic cells would increase utmost trillion all over the body.

The two principal characteristics of leukemia are: how rapid the disease develops and the lineage of the blood cell turns out to be cancerous. If the malignant cells have descended from the progenitors of red cells, macrophages, granulocytes, or the platelets it is classified as myelocytic or myelogenous. On the other hand, it is referred as lymphocytic if it originated from a lymphocyte precursor cells.

In addition, either of the two classifications, it can be either acute or chronic. In acute leukemias, it develops quickly without prompt treatment. It is where the production of the normal blood cells is suppressed that will eventually die after a matter of weeks. However, in chronic leukemias, patients might survive for several years without treatment due to the effects of the leukemic cells.

In all cases of leukemia, the abnormal cells do not inhibit severely the normal cell development. The four primary forms of leukemia are the following: acute myelocytic, acute lymphocytic, chronic myelocytic, and chronic lymphocytic. It can be further subcategorized depending on its appearance, characteristic molecules present on their surface, and the stage of development.

Cause:

Studies showed that the main reasons for having leukemia are unknown. However, intensive exposure to radiation such as radiation therapy, X-rays or atomic bomb might be a significant factor in developing acute and chronic leukemia.

In addition, exposure to certain chemicals such as benzene for a long period may cause acute myelocytic leukemia. Chemotherapy drugs are also known to increase the risk of leukemia such as those synthetic drugs used to treat breast cancer, ovarian cancer, etc. Tobacco smoking is also a treat for some forms of leukemia.

 

Effects:

The symptoms of leukemia depend on the quantity of leukemia cells and the location of these cells in the body. The first sign of this ailment is a flu-like symptom.

Those with acute leukemia may experience headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion, seizures and loss of muscle control if the brain is affected while, those patients with chronic leukemia may not develop any symptoms.     

Furthermore, swollen lymph nodes usually appear in the armpit or neck. Infected individuals also develops night sweats, fevers, recurrent infections, weakness or tardiness, anemia, easily develop bruising or bleeding (gums), balance problems, difficulty in breathing, discomforts and swelling in the abdomen, weight loss with no basis, and painful joints and bones. It also affects other part of the body such as the kidneys, digestive tract, heart, lungs and the genital organ.
